A Woolston couple are denying neglecting treatment for 14 sick cats and the case is heading for a defended hearing.
Graeme Thomas Smith and Gillian Mary Smith, both 56-year-old beneficiaries, entered not guilty pleas in the Christchurch District Court today.
They are charged that from November 7 to December 7 they failed to ensure 14 sick cats they owned received treatment to alleviate any unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress.
The couple were still not represented by a lawyer even though the judge at the first hearing on April 22 suggested they get legal advice.
Today Judge David Holderness asked if they wanted the trial to be before a jury or before a judge-alone.
Graeme Smith said they opted for a hearing before a judge. ?That will do us, sir,? he said.
The couple have been remanded to June 8 for a status hearing where the case will be discussed and arrangements settled for the defended hearing.
