Raid on salvaged goods brings jail term

One of the two men who stole salvaged alcohol and grocery items from a skip outside Pak?n?Save?s Wainoni supermarket after the February 22earthquake, was today jailed for 17 months.

Ross Wayne Cant, 39, thought the items were going to be dumped or discarded, and did not think he was taking items of value, defence counsel Colin Eason said at the Christchurch District Court sentencing held at the Rangiora Court House.

The skip outside the damaged building was in a secure yard, but the items were left out in the open, he said. Both men had been drinking alcohol.

Judge Colin Doherty said Cant climbed over a block wall and passed the items to his co-offender.

He said Cant had about 120 convictions over a long period, half for dishonesty, and 22 for burglary.

Cant?s pre-sentence report said he did not express any remorse, and was not willing to make changes to his life.

Judge Doherty said the men offended when the city was under great stress after the second earthquake.

He imprisoned Cant and recommended he attend a medium detention rehabilitation programme, and be assessed for a drug and alcohol programme.

On April 27, Cant?s co-offender, Martin Paul Tait, a 43-year-old unemployed man, was jailed for 15 months for this burglary and other assault, damage, and trespass charges. Tait had 39 previous convictions for violence, drug use, dishonesty, and non-compliance with court orders.
