Police fear man injured in driving incident may die

Police fear a man now in hospital may die from injuries received in an alleged driving incident in Linwood last month.

The Christchurch District Court at Nga Hau e Wha marae was told today that Daniel Mark Brundson remained in critical condition in Christchurch Hospital?s intensive care unit, almost a month after the incident on Griffiths Avenue.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Mark Berryman told Judge Alistair Garland: ?It is expected he is not going to survive the injuries.?

He said police were seeking another month?s remand for the 20-year-old man who faces charges relating to the incident, so that they could see how Brundson?s condition progressed, and they were awaiting further forensic evidence.

Berryman said the police believed the incident involved the alleged victim being run over, and then reversed over.

Before the court for a remand appearance was Beau Dean Stade, an unemployed man from Strowan, who faces a charge of careless driving causing injury to Brundson.

He also faces a charge of careless driving while under the influence of drink, but not so as to commit an offence against the drink-driving regulations.

The incident took place late on August 19.

Defence counsel Michelle Barrell said the alleged victim was a close friend of Stade?s.

She sought to have Stade?s bail curfew ? which now applies from 10pm to 5am every night ? relaxed for the remand but Judge Garland refused.

He further remanded Stade on bail to October 14, without plea, and told him: ?Clearly the situation is serious and it looks as though eventually it is going to be more serious.?
