Bail granted in Woodend shooting case

After about 10 weeks in custody, bail has been granted to a Pines Beach man facing charges over an incident in which another man was shot in the leg.

Christchurch District Court Judge Gary MacAskill granted electronically monitored bail to Kenn Arther Fowler, 36, who is charged with discharging a firearm at the other man with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and unlawful possession of a .22 rifle.

In a July 6 confrontation in front of the house, police allege that Fowler fired a shot that hit the leg of the other man, narrowly missing the vital femoral artery.

At Fowler?s first court appearance, the police said that the victim had been nearly killed by the gunshot, but a week later they were able to tell the court that he was out of danger.

The court has been told that the incident followed an exchange of text messages. Fowler alleges threats were made and he was acting in self-defence.

At today?s session inside the Christchurch Men?s Prison, Judge MacAskill granted bail on conditions and remanded him to a pre-trial call-over on November 14.
