Offender adds to list of 126 convictions

A 41-year-old described by his lawyer as ?an intelligent man who has wasted his life on court appearances and prison terms? was sentenced to another 26 months in prison in the Christchurch District Court today.

Defence counsel Elizabeth Bulger said Derek Edwin Simmonds had lost his early life to drug addiction and offending but his time in custody had given him the opportunity to reflect on his future.

Judge David Saunders said Simmonds had 126 prior convictions and was being sentenced on charges of receiving, burglary, unlawfully taking a car, and threatening grevious bodily harm.

In June last year Simmonds received four mag wheels, and when people came to his property about them he threatened them.

He burgled a garage in August, and the same month he stole a van.

The owner of the van said it was used for work and had to have ignition repairs.

Judge Saunders sentenced him to 26 months prison, but said as he had served 12 months already, he would probably appear before the Parole Board in December.

He also ordered a reparation payment of $761 to the van owner.
