Man banned from owning a computer

A 47-year-old man convicted of child pornography charges told the judge in that he would never own a computer again.

Edward George Timms was being sentenced at the Rangiora Court House on charges having objectionable images on his computer.

Christchurch District Court Judge David Saunders said the child victims were badly abused and taken advantage of by men for the purposes of making money. He said the courts took a dim view about people who viewed these images.

Defence counsel Craig Ruane said Timms was remorseful and did not want a computer in the future.

Judge Saunders sentenced Timms to 12 months intensive supervision where he would undertake counselling programmes and treatment to reduce the risk of re-offending.

He said Timms was not allowed to own a computer, or have internet connections in the house, or access to adult television programmes.

He also gave him 140 hours community work and ordered the destruction of the computer and the images.
