Time court issues were sorted, says judge

A judge says it is high time court issues were sorted out in Canterbury so that urgent matters can be handled quickly.

Christchurch District Court Judge Gary MacAskill was speaking at the Rangiora Court House where the city?s arrest cases are transported each day, and where its sentencing courts are held.

The city?s court house remains out of action in the central city and its courts are sitting at venues all around the city and in other centres.

Before the court was a man who allegedly attacked a judge three months ago.

He has now been remanded for a ?section 9? hearing for the court to determine whether he committed the acts he has been charged with.

After that hearing the court will determine whether Muhammad Tanvir, 26, is fit to plead to the charges of wilful damage, assault on a woman, and assault.

Tanvir allegedly?attacked Judge Jackie Moran on July 20 at the end of a Mental Health Act hearing in the city.

Judge MacAskill remanded Tanvir to October 25 at the Rangiora Court House to set a date for the hearing. He bailed him to stay at Hillmorton Hospital where he has been undergoing assessment and treatment.

Setting the date for the hearing was a problem for the court, and Judge MacAskill said it was high time court issues were sorted out in Canterbury, so that urgent matters could be handled urgently.
