Accused becomes ill in blackmail trial

The trial of four people on blackmail charges was halted early for the day when one of the accused, 49-year-old Ritchie Stuart Clutterbuck, had a heart attack and was taken to hospital.

Justice Robert Dobson halted the taking of evidence in the High Court at Christchurch from the afternoon adjournment when a nurse and doctor examined Clutterbuck.

The judge told the jury that Clutterbuck had had a minor heart attack, and he had discussed alternatives with the defence counsel for proceeding with the trial.

He asked the jury to return to court at 9.30am on Wednesday when there would be more information available about Clutterbuck?s medical condition.

The trial began on Monday.
