A forensic psychiatric nurse will conduct a screening test today on the 22-year-old man charged with robbing a Woolston bank last week while holding an object that appeared to be a bomb and detonator.
The screening test on Timothy Daniel Whelan will decide whether his defence counsel Michael Starling will seek a psychiatric report next week under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act.
Whelan remains in custody. He was remanded in custody at his first appearance in court on Saturday and counsel Alex Millen indicated that an application for his release on bail was likely to be made today.
However, Starling today told Christchurch District Court Judge Paul Kellar that no bail application would go ahead and Whelan would be seen by a psychiatric nurse after his court appearance.
Whelan is charged with robbing a woman teller at the ANZ bank while armed with what appeared to be a bomb and detonator.
The robbery was caught on security camera with the man making no attempt to conceal his face as he approached the teller. Whelan was interviewed by police on Friday after the security photographs were published in the media.
Judge Kellar remanded the unemployed Parklands man to October 9.
