Bus window scratcher faces big bill
An 18-year-old student faces a $2100 reparation claim for scratching 33 windows on 14 buses.
Jack Dargan, of Corsair Bay, admitted a representative charge of damaging buses by etching on their windows while riding in them.
He was caught on security cameras damaging the buses during April, and faced five charges of etching on a Red Bus without lawful authority and without consent of the owner.
He also had one charge dated that between April 4 and May 1, of damaging 13 Red Buses by etching on them 28 times, which was a representative charge covering multiple offences.
At the Christchurch District Court session at Nga Hau e Wha marae Judge Tony Couch took a plea of guilty on the representative charge and suggested to the police that they withdraw the other charges.
Police prosecutor David Rusbatch said the police diversion scheme was being considered for Dargan, who had no previous convictions.
The scheme enables first offenders to avoid having a conviction as long as they agree to make amends for their offending.
Rusbatch said Dargan had caused more than $2100 damage on 33 windows on 14 buses and reparation to the Red Bus Company was being sought.
Dargan, who appeared in court with plaster on his foot and on crutches, was remanded to appear at court again on October 23. A decision on possible diversion will have been made by then.
