Bank robbery accused released on bail
Bail has been granted to a man charged with robbing a Christchurch bank while armed with something that appeared to be a bomb.
Police did not oppose release on bail for 22-year-old Timothy Daniel Whelan, at his remand appearance before Judge Patrick Treston in Christchurch District Court today.
Defence counsel Michael Starling sought bail for the remand to October 18, after Whelan?s week in custody for a psychiatric screening test.
The test showed no psychiatric issues, which would have triggered a call for a court-ordered full psychiatric report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act today. No report has been sought.
Whelan is alleged to have gone to a Woolston bank on September 24 and robbed a woman teller of cash, while armed with an object that appeared to be a bomb and detonator.
Starling indicated a plea would be entered to the charge next week.
The person in the bank made no attempt to conceal his face from the bank?s security cameras, and Whelan was approached by the police a few days later when the photographs had been published in the media.
Judge Treston imposed bail conditions for Whelan to live at an address in Avonhead, stay away from two named banks, abide by an overnight curfew and not apply for any travel documents.
