Murder parolee Melissa Anne Wepa has been recalled to prison to serve more of her life sentence after being arrested for breaching her release conditions.
Wepa, 38, denies the breach and was today remanded in the Christchurch District Court to a status hearing on January 31 for a hearing date to be set.
Wepa was arrested in November and the Parole Board heard her case last month and ordered her recall.
She has a distinctive lizard tattoo on her face and was said to have Mongrel Mob connections at the time of the murder in 1997.
She was jailed for life for the murder of a Porirua woman when she accused the victim of telling police about Wepa?s involvement in a burglary and stabbed her 50 times.
In 2005 she escaped from Arohata Prison, north of Wellington, with another inmate after using a dummy in her cell bed to fool guards.
Wepa was released from prison on parole in May after serving about 15 years. She was arrested for breaching her prison release conditions by changing addresses without permission.
Crown prosecutor Claire Boshier today told Judge Noel Walsh that the prosecution for the breach would continue even though Wepa had now been recalled to prison to serve more of her sentence.
