73-year-old admits sex offending against four girls

A 73-year-old man who is already serving prison time for sex offending has now admitted sexual assaults on four girls.

Dennis John Batchelor, of Belfast, retired, has admitted eight more charges involving young girls, at a Christchurch District Court sitting before Judge David Holderness.

He has admitted charges involving four complainants: two of indecent assault, three of sexual violation involving oral sex, two of digital penetration, and one of sexual violation by rape.

He has been remanded for sentence on February 21.

Batchelor is a serving prisoner after receiving a three-year jail term on November 1, on objectionable publications charges. He had recorded sexual activities on Facebook and had images of babies and toddlers being abused.

Batchelor had set up a Facebook page under a teenage girl persona and in October 2011 his computers, USB drives, CDs, DVDs, diskettes, cameras, and documents were seized.

He was referred to the Christchurch STOP rehabilitation programme, but after finishing that he set up another Facebook account and continued the offending.

At the November sentencing, the judge noted that Batchelor had a previous conviction for indecent assault on a girl and psychological reports rated him as a moderate to high risk of sexual reoffending.

The judge said Batchelor had made limited progress and had limited insight into his offending.

The latest charges he has admitted relate to sexual assaults on young girls from 2001 to 2006.
