Man admits burglaries but denies Spreydon arsons

A 40-year-old man has admitted burgling three Spreydon properties but denies setting fires that caused damage totalling $600,000.

Keri Martin Wakefield, unemployed, pleaded guilty to the burglaries at a remand appearance before Judge Emma Smith in the Christchurch District Court today.

The police say damage totalling more than $600,000 was caused in the fires.

The properties were a house and a property owned by the Spreydon Baptist Church, both in Lyttelton Street, and a medical centre in Barrington Street.

Kerryn Beaton appeared for the Public Defender Service. She made no application for bail for Wakefield because it was refused at his first court appearance on December 27.

Judge Smith remanded him in custody to March 1 on all charges. A post-committal conference that day will announce whether he will be sent for trial on the three arson charges.
