Police have laid a more serious charge against a man charged with assaulting another man in an alleged incident between neighbours in St Albans last week.
A bail application for Justin James Taia, 39, was abandoned at the Christchurch District Court yesterday until a suitable bail address could be found.
At the hearing before Judge John Strettell, Taia had a charge of injuring with intent to injure withdrawn and replaced with a more serious charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Police oppose bail for Taia, and Judge Strettell told his counsel, Steven Hembrow, that even if a bail address was found that was suitable, it did not mean the judge at the bail hearing would automatically grant it.
Judge Strettell remanded Taia in custody until January 30.
He is charged with wounding Vaea Lam with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Mr Lam received serious head injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital where his condition was described as stable the next day. Police said the men lived in nearby flats.
