Custody remand for dairy robbery accused
Police allege a 24-year-old Riccarton man was armed with a cricket bat and a hammer when he robbed two Christchurch dairies.
The man, Benjamin Christopher Hardy, made no bail application and was remanded in custody to February 12 when he appeared before Judge Jane Farish in the Christchurch District Court today.
Duty lawyer Steve Hembrow said the remand would allow defence counsel to be appointed and a proper bail application to be made.
?There is a mental health aspect to this matter and that needs to be explored fully in any bail application,? he said.
Hardy, a sign writer, faces charges of robbing a dairy in Riccarton on January 13, while armed with a cricket bat, and a dairy in Halswell two days later while armed with a hammer. He was remanded without plea.
