Bashing charge likely to be defended
A St Albans man has indicated he will defend a charge arising from an alleged serious bashing of his neighbour a fortnight ago.
Thirty-nine-year-old Justin James Taia made a brief remand appearance before Judge John Strettell in the Christchurch District Court today, charged with wounding Vaea Lam with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The men lived in nearby flats in St Albans before the January 16 incident that put Mr Lam in hospital with serious head injuries.
Duty lawyer Steve Hembrow said bail was not being sought today because no suitable address was available for Taia.
Judge Strettell remanded Taia in custody to a March 28 post-committal conference ? the usual path for a case that is heading for a jury trial.
He granted leave for Mr Hembrow to have the case brought back to court before that date if a bail address became available.
