Man admits failing to report fatal crash

A Canterbury man who allegedly fled overseas and then returned to face charges has admitted failing to report an accident in which his passenger died.

Cody Marcus John Pierce, 22, pleaded guilty to two charges at the Christchurch District Court session at Nga Hau e Wha marae today, about a month after returning from the Gold Coast.

He has admitted failing to report the accident at Johnson Road, West Melton, on October 27, within 24 hours of it occurring, as well as driving while disqualified.

But he has pleaded not guilty to charges of drink-driving causing the death of Sean Christopher Frost, 43,?of Christchurch, and failing to stay and check for injuries at the scene of the accident which happened when a car allegedly being driven by Pierce hit a power pole near the intersection of Neave and Johnson Roads?about 9pm.

Judge Raoul Neave today remanded Pierce on continued bail to March 4 for a pre-trial hearing on the two charges where he is pleading not guilty. The other charges are remanded to the same date.

Police believed Pierce was picked up by a friend soon after the crash and left for Australia. Mr Frost died in Christchurch Hospital five days after the crash and a warrant was issued in December for Pierce?s arrest.

He was arrested when he returned to Christchurch Airport in early January, held in custody overnight, and then granted bail to live with his parents.
