Rebuild worker has some jail time to serve
Christchurch has got a willing worker for the rebuild ? when he gets out of prison in a few months.
Christopher John Francis Kennedy, a 43-year-old with a serious alcohol problem, had travelled from Wellington to get work in Christchurch.
His plan went awry when he arrived too close to Christmas and there was no work available. He resorted to drinking and shoplifting.
Defence counsel Phillip Allan said at Kennedy?s Christchurch District Court sentencing that all of his offending had been committed to get alcohol or under the influence of alcohol, or both.
He stole food items, liquor, and even a school girl uniform from the Peaches and Cream adult shop in central Christchurch.
Mr Allan told Judge Jane Farish: ?He wants your honour to know that when he gets out he is keen to get back on track with his plans and get employed on the rebuild.?
Judge Farish imposed a term of nine months? jail for the six shoplifting offences, and ordered that he undertake assessment and treatment for alcohol abuse as required. Kennedy had pleaded guilty.
?Until you do something about your drinking you are going to come back before the court,? she told him. ?Shopowners and the community are entitled to a bit of respite from your offending.?
