Remand on tourist attack charges

A 27-year-old Papanui man charged with attacks on tourists in the central city was granted a further registrar?s remand today when he was due to make an appearance in the Christchurch District Court.

Karl Jaison Stowers, a cleaner, has entered no pleas to charges of assaulting six male tourists with intent to injure them, and wounding two of them with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

It is understood he returned from overseas to face the charges.

He has not yet appeared in court. Both his scheduled appearances have been covered by registrar?s remands.

Four other men are already on remand to other dates on charges relating to the same alleged incident in the City Mall.
