Custody remand continues for rape accused
An 18-year-old youth charged with two rapes has been further remanded in custody without plea until Thursday, at a brief appearance by video-link in the Christchurch District Court.
Judge Alistair Garland continued name suppression for the teenager at the request of defence counsel Elizabeth Bulger, who said she expected pleas could be entered at the next appearance. No bail application was made.
The teenager from rural North Canterbury has been charged with the rape of a 17-year-old in a car in Pound Road behind Christchurch Airport during a night in October, and the abduction and rape of an 11-year-old girl next morning.
He faces charges of rape, unlawful sexual connection, threatening to kill or cause grievous bodily harm, reckless driving, and failing to stop for the police. Police allege he was arrested at the end of a high speed chase in which he crashed his car into a power pole in Loburn, North Canterbury.
