Alleged burglar offers medical advice to judge
A man accused of being the “plum sauce burglar” has offered a judge some well-meaning medical advice.
Judge Emma Smith received the advice with a chuckle as she remanded the man in custody for two months.
Dylan James Morehu, 34, appeared by video-link from Christchurch Men’s Prison, before Judge Smith in the Christchurch District Court today.
He denies a charge of burgling a Linwood property, driving while disqualified, theft of a vehicle, careless driving, theft from a car, and possession of a knife in a public place.
Defence counsel Paul Norcross said there was no application for bail, for the remand to February 3 for a case management hearing that will set a trial date.
Judge Smith was noting the remand details on the paperwork towards the end of the hearing, when Morehu spoke up to say he could not hear what was happening.
“It’s okay,” said Judge Smith. “I’m just mumbling to myself. I do that sometimes.”
“I’m on medication for that,” Morehu replied. “You might need some yourself, Miss.”
Police allege Morehu was disturbed burgling a Linwood house. The burglar made off but crashed the car and when it was found in Churchill Street, items from the burglary were found. These included a Jim Beam bottle – complete with labels – that actually contained plum sauce.
Morehu was badly bitten by a police dog when he was arrested and required surgery which kept him in hospital when his case was initially called at court.
