Central city street robbery admitted

City Centre sign-01Home and community detention has been ruled out for a man who has been in custody for more than two months charged with an early morning street robbery in central Christchurch.

Joshua Lukic, a 26-year-old labourer from Rangiora, admitted the robbery charge at a pre-trial session before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the Christchurch District Court yesterday.

The judge remanded him in custody for a pre-sentence report and sentence on June 11. He did not order a report that would allow home and community detention to be considered.

At the request of defence counsel Andrew Bailey, the judge did not record the conviction straight away because it would mean Lukic would be moved to a new wing in Christchurch Men’s Prison and he would not be able to complete training courses he is working on.

That meant he also delayed the reading of a first-strike warning under the system that imposes heavier penalties on repeat violent offenders.

Police alleged at the time that Lukic pulled up beside two youths on Fitzgerald Avenue, near Tuam Street, and robbed them of $60, two cellphones, a hat, top, bag, spray cans, backpack, and pre-mixed drinks. The incident took place in the early hours of January 11.
