Court told of mum’s chaotic night
A Christchurch mum’s terrible night when she had to handle two random incidents with violent drunks has been recounted in court.
The woman went to Christchurch Hospital with her 16-year-old daughter in the early hours of Sunday morning.
While they were there, the daughter was assaulted by a drunk.
When they were driving home, the car overheated and they pulled onto the forecourt of a service station on Marshland Road.
At 6.34am, she and her daughter were sitting in the car, with the bonnet open to let the engine cool down, when Kyle Trevor Ernest Winslade came by.
He was drunk. He has a history littered with drink-related offending, and he has done a rehabilitation programme and has taken the anti-drinking drug, Antabuse.
Winslade came up to the car and tried to open the doors. When he couldn’t, he slammed down the bonnet, bending it.
The 43-year-old roofer appeared before Judge Alistair Garland in the Christchurch District Court today and pleaded guilty to a charge of intentional damage.
Defence counsel Philip Watts said Winslade acknowledged his issues with alcohol. He had gone drinking that night because he had learnt that his separated partner planned to return to China with their child.
A victim impact report from the mother was before the court. She wrote that a lot of people would have been “really freaked out by what happened”. She was annoyed that someone would do what Winslade did and cause so much damage – repairs cost $540.
“It must have been very frightening for that 16-year-old girl,” said Judge Garland.
He put Winslade on supervision for nine months with a special condition that he be assessed and attend counselling and treatment for alcohol and drugs treatment as required, and pay for the damage today.
