Home detention for raid on building supplies

Court House-07Home detention has been granted to a 35-year-old father-of-three who says he was acting under a threat to his family when he joined in a raid to steal building materials.

Hayden Reginald Vandijk, a gib stopper from Mount Pleasant, was sentenced to six months of home detention with six months of special release conditions to follow, which would allow rehabilitation courses.

Christchurch District Court Judge Emma Smith also ordered the confiscation of his trailer which had been used in the two burglaries of the yards of Wellbuilt Homes and Wilson Built NZ Ltd at Lincoln in November.

Defence counsel Vicki Walsh said Vandijk “chose to prioritise what he thought was a threat to his family”. He now realised there were many other ways he could have removed that concern.

She said Vandijk was a a father-of-three who was now in full time work and was well regarded by his employer.

Judge Smith said Vandijk and a co-offender – who is being dealt with separately – had prepared for the burglaries which targeted building materials. Goods worth $8000 had been taken from the two yards, but it had all been recovered.

He said Vandijk had once been a prolific offender who had previously been imprisoned and put on community-base sentences as well as rehabilitation courses.

Since then there had been a “sea change” in his lifestyle. He had a partner and children and drugs were no longer part of his life. He had been given a supervisory role by his employer.

She warned Vandijk that this was “the final intervention” that he could expect from the courts.
