Violation jury retires for the weekend
After four hours deliberation, the jury has gone home for the weekend in the trial of Daniel Juan Daly, who is charged with kidnapping, assault, and sexual violation of two Christchurch sex workers.
The jury in the High Court at Christchurch began its deliberations at 2pm on the fifth day of the trial before Justice Rachel Dunningham.
Daly, 28, was charged with kidnapping, sexually violating, and twice assaulting one woman using a knife as a weapon. He was charged with kidnapping the other woman, assaulting her, five charges of sexually violating her, attempted sexual violation, and rape. The charges relate to Daly having sex with two sex workers he met in central Christchurch on the night of January 24-25, 2013. Both women complained later of the rough treatment they had received. Daly denies all charges.
Before the trial adjourned for the week, Justice Dunningham responded to a jury question – after discussions with counsel – by discharging Daly on the charge of attempted sexual violation.
The jury will return to the jury room to continue considering the remaining 12 charges from 10am on Monday.
