Date set for cocaine sentencing
A date in Christchurch has been set for the sentencing of a Brazilian man who has admitted possession of cocaine for supply.
The Crown had been considering whether Thiago August De Oliviera, 31, a factory hand, ought to be sentenced in the High Court or the District Court and whether the case should be sent to Auckland where alleged co-offenders are being dealt with.
One man caught in the police’s Operation Grenoble drugs bust has already been pleaded guilty and been jailed for six years in Auckland in April.
De Oliviera pleaded guilty on June 5. He appeared on remand before Judge Brian Callaghan in the Christchurch District Court today, but no decision had been made.
Judge Callaghan decided the case needed to be progressed “in the interests of justice” and set the sentencing for July 30 at a Crown sentencing session in Christchurch. He remains on bail.
Two other Christchurch men arrested are being dealt with separately.
