A woman is in hospital with serious injuries and a man has been remanded in custody on a charge of assaulting her.
Police opposed bail for the man who was arrested after they attended an incident in Cheyenne Street,Sockburn, yesterday.
Russell Alan Moa, 46, a decorator from Sockburn, appeared before Judge Emma Smith in the Christchurch District Court and was remanded without plea on a charge of intentionally injuring the woman.
Judge Smith said the police opposed bail because of the woman’s “extraordinary injuries”, and they had provided photographs to the judge, who noted that she was in hospital in very serious condition with fractures to her ribs and vertebrae.
Defence counsel Michael Knowles said Moa denied causing the woman’s injuries.
Judge Smith refused bail and remanded Moa in custody for an appearance by video-link from the prison on August 4. She said his application may be reconsidered at a later appearance, for release on electronically monitored bail.
