Bail refused for stabbing accused
Twenty-four-year-old Sonja Russell was denied bail when she appeared in court today facing a charge relating to a stabbing in Phillipstown.
Police opposed her release on bail, saying that their inquiries were continuing and the examination of the alleged crime scene were not complete.
Russell was charged with intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to the man, who required surgery at Christchurch Hospital for a 2.5cm stab wound to his abdomen.
The police told the judge he had been stabbed as he got into a car outside the house, after a series of verbal confrontations between him and Russell.
Duty lawyer Vicki Walsh said Russell asked for bail because she was the caregiver for two children, and she was able to live at another address away from where the police were making their inquiries.
Judge Alistair Garland considered the bail application and then remanded Russell in custody without plea for an appearance by video-link from the prison on August 21.
