The High Court trial has been delayed for 54-year-old Timothy Joseph Foley, charged with the murder of a woman at a house in Linwood in June 2012.
Justice Christian Whata held closed-court sessions before the decision to put off the scheduled two-week trial, and the jury panel was then brought into court to be addressed by the judge before being sent away.
The judge suppressed all the details of the closed-court discussions.
Foley has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Michelle Mary Lawrence after an incident on June 10, 2012. She was taken to hospital with critical injuries and died three weeks later.
Justice Whata adjourned the trial and remanded Foley in custody to a High Court pre-trial call-over on August 22, when a new trial date may be set.
