Disturbance in court during stabbing appearance
A man charged with stabbing a man alleged to be a rival gang member was remanded in custody after a disturbance during an appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.
Nathan Anthony Whelan, 22, was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after an incident outside McDonald’s in Linwood last night.
His victim was stabbed at least twice in his upper body, but his injuries were not serious.
Judge Gary MacAskill remanded Whelan in custody to September 1 for a bail hearing, but said the hearing could be brought forward if his defence counsel arranged court time.
As Whelan left the courtroom a woman tried to give him a hug, and called out that she loved him and was here for him, before they were both escorted out of court. She objected to other people in the court who were laughing as she left.
