Pilot’s sentencing delayed for victims’ reports
The Singapore Airlines pilot who crashed into a car towing a horse float and seriously injured two of his passengers had his sentencing delayed until Friday so victim impact reports can be obtained.
On October 1 Benjamin Yonghao Wu, 32, was travelling on Maddisons Road near Rolleston with four other occupants, who all worked for Singapore Airlines, when he drove through a stop sign and crashed.
In the Christchurch District Court last week, he pleaded guilty to two charges of reckless driving causing injury, and defence counsel Kerry Cook said Wu had $15,000 available to give the two victims as emotional harm payments.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll said the victim impact reports on the two injured people had not been prepared and remanded the court sitting to 2.15pm, but then it was found the reports could not be completed and the case was further remanded to Friday morning.
The injured people were not wearing seatbelts and both had to be cut out of the car.
One passenger suffered bleeding and swelling to his brain, and internal bleeding and underwent emergency surgery that night.
A woman passenger received a fractured left arm, shattered pelvis, ruptured bladder and haematoma to her spleen.
Wu said he saw the stop sign late before slowing his vehicle but did not want to make an abrupt stop as he thought this would be uncomfortable for his passengers.
