Police logo-05Police did not oppose bail for a Pines Beach man facing five charges arising from the finding of an alleged stolen vehicle “chop shop” in North Canterbury.

Ryan Jay Mills, 26, ended up in custody ahead of his appearance in the Christchurch District Court today. He had been granted police bail after his arrest, but had then been arrested again for a breach.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Jeff Kay said police would not oppose Ryan being released again with a condition for him to live at his Pines Beach address.

The alleged stolen vehicle operation was found when Rangiora police raided a property on the outskirts of Woodend on Monday. They went there after a call from a contractor who had used a GPS system to track a $65,000 digger which had been taken from a Redwood subdivision worksite overnight.

Mills has been charged with receiving stolen vehicles worth $5000, $4000, $11,000, a trailer worth $1500, and the digger.

Judge Gary MacAskill remanded him on bail to October 17, for a lawyer to be arranged.
