Remand on drug, firearms charges
Police opposed bail for a 31-year-old man with alleged gang links who was arrested on drug and firearm charges after a raid on a property in Avondale, Christchurch, this morning.
Stephen Wallace Smith was charged with unlawful possession of a Smith and Wesson .32 calibre pistol, possession of the class A drug methamphetamine for supply, and unlawful possession of a sawn-off .22 calibre rifle.
Police said the raid was part of an on-going focus to disrupt the drug trade, gangs, and their illegal activities in Canterbury. They alleged that Smith had links to the Head Hunters gang.
When Smith appeared in the Christchurch District Court before Judge Gary MacAskill, duty lawyer Tony Garrett said no bail application would be made straight away after considering the police document opposing his release.
Mr Garrett said bail could be considered when Smith had his defence counsel assigned and had received the appropriate legal advice.
Judge MacAskill remanded Smith in custody to Thursday next week.
