Custody remand over police chase crash
A man charged over an incident in which six people were injured in Yaldhurst Road during a police chase was remanded in custody at an appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.
He did not seek bail and was remanded to December 1 by Judge Brian Callaghan. Defence counsel Kerry Cook said a bail application might be made at the next appearance.
Graham Theo Payne, a 55-year-old listed as having no fixed abode in central Christchurch, faced three charges of reckless driving causing injury, and one charge of failing to stop for a police vehicle using its lights and siren.
It is believed the charges related to a police officer who was injured when the car allegedly crashed through a police road block, and to two people in the car being chased.
Three elderly people in a car struck head-on in Yaldhurst Road remain in hospital – one in a critical condition – and more charges may follow.
Payne’s next court appearance will be video-link from the prison.
