A prisoner in custody has been recaptured after allegedly making an opportunist escape from the Christchurch Court House.
The man, 36-year-old Shane Archhold, was due to appear in the pre-trial conference session in the No 5 District Court today, and had been brought to the Court House from the Christchurch Men’s Prison where he was being held on remand. When it was time for his court appearance he could not be found.
Corrections Staff checked the secure areas of the Court House, suspicious that he had slipped through an unlocked door into the public areas on level two of the building.
He then made his way to the ground floor and out the Court House’s main doors. The main entrance – the only public exit for the building – is covered by video surveillance, and the video records were checked and showed it was how the man had made his escape.
Archbold was facing a charge of assault with intent to injure. He has pleaded not guilty and was due to have his jury trial scheduled.
Police said Archbold was a 181cm tall male Maori with a shaved head and distinctive pentagram or star tattoo on his neck.
He was last seen wearing black tracksuit pants with a white stripe, black trainers and a distinctive grey-black chequered top.
He had previous links to North Canterbury and Richmond in Christchurch. Police issued a press release stating they had found Archbold in the Aranui area shortly before 1pm and he would face charges.
Police issued a statement saying that Archbold had been found in Aranui shortly before 1pm and would face charges as a result of the escape.
