Second man admits Jesse Ryder assault

Court House-Sept-2013-08One of the men involved in the injuring of cricketer Jesse Ryder pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with intent to injure in the Christchurch District Court today.

The unexpected guilty plea forestalled a jury trial which had been scheduled for March 2, and means that the man and a younger man – who had pleaded guilty earlier – can now go straight to sentencing. The 37-year-old builder has continued name suppression, and was remanded on bail to May 6 for sentencing.

Judge Stephen O’Driscoll ordered a pre-sentence report and a report to assess the man’s suitability for a home detention sentence.

The two charges he faced of assault, and injuring with reckless disregard for Ryder’s safety, were replaced with the one charge today.

Early on March 28, 2013, the incident started inside the Aikmans Bar, Merivale, and ended with the head injury to Ryder outside the bar. Ryder was admitted to hospital with concussion for several days.

The man’s co-offender had already pleaded guilty to assault and was also remanded to May 6. His sentencing had been put off to ascertain the outcome of the planned jury trial, because the result might affect his position.

Judge O’Driscoll said the restorative justice process was available to both men.
