Suppression lifts over Jesse Ryder assaults

February 9, 2015 | By More

Court House-doorwayName suppression has lifted on the two men who have admitted assaulting cricket international Jesse Ryder in Merivale in March 2013.

The order lifting the ban on publication was made by Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the Christchurch District Court today, a week after the second man admitted the assault.

The men are Craig Joseph O’Neill, 38, a builder, and his nephew Dylan James O’Neill, aged 22, a carpet layer.

They have had suppression since their first court appearance soon after the assault, which put Ryder in hospital with head injuries.

Dylan O’Neill pleaded guilty last year to a charge of assaulting Ryder and was remanded for sentencing after the trial of his uncle on a more serious charge.

Craig O’Neill pleaded guilty last week to a charge of assault with intent to injure, ahead of his trial, and sentencing for both men was set for May 6 – a date that remains after today’s suppression hearing.

The assaults took place at Aikman’s Bar in Merivale in the early hours of March 28, 2013, and in a carpark nearby.

There was no appearance in court by either of the men or their defence counsel today. Judge O’Driscoll announced in court that as a result of earlier appearances and information received from counsel, the interim suppression orders on both men had now lapsed.
