Custody remand on historic kidnap, rape charges
A Christchurch man has been remanded in custody after his arrest on charges relating to the 1994 alleged kidnapping and rape of a woman in Burwood.
The 48-year-old man appeared before Judge Jane McMeeken in the Christchurch District Court, and was remanded to February 23 for an appearance by video-link from the prison.
No bail application was made by duty lawyer Steve Hembrow. A lawyer will be appointed for the man before his next appearance.
He is charged with a series of offences on May 9, 1994: burglary of a house while armed with a knife, assaulting the woman while armed with a knife, kidnapping her with intent to have sex, two charges of sexual violation, and rape.
Mr Hembrow applied for interim name suppression for the man for family reasons – he has shared care of a young daughter who does not yet know about his arrest – and there are concerns for the health of his elderly mother.
Judge McMeeken granted the suppression.
