A second sex attack charge has been laid against a man already in custody on allegations of sexual offending around Christchurch Hospital last month.
The man has been held in custody since his first appearance on January 15, while a psychiatric report has been prepared under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act.
Defence counsel Grant Tyrrell told the Christchurch District Court yesterday that the report had now been completed, and asked that the case be remanded for further legal instructions from the 39-year-old Christchurch man.
He was originally charged with intentionally and obscenely exposing his genitals in Christchurch Hospital, and assaulting a woman nearby in Hagley Park with the intention of committing sexual violation on January 10.
The new charge alleges another attack on an unknown woman in Hagley Park, also with intent to commit sexual violation, on the same day. Police say she screamed and fought him off. They made a public appeal for the woman to come forward in the days after the alleged attack.
Judge Noel Walsh considered a bail application put forward by Mr Tyrrell but declined bail and remanded the man in custody to March 19. He granted continued interim name suppression.
