Psych report ordered over dog death
A psychiatric report has been ordered for a 25-year-old man charged with kicking a dog to death.
The report was ordered at an appearance by the tradesman in the Christchurch District Court today.
He is next due to appear on April 14, with the report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act being prepared in the meantime.
The man has entered no pleas to four charges which the police allege took place on January 17 in Christchurch.
He is charged with wilfully illtreating a dog by kicking it and causing it to die, reckless driving on Lincoln Road, failing to stop for a police car using its lights and sirens, and failing to remain stopped for a police officer to get his details.
Defence counsel James Rapley asked for the remand for the psychiatric report to be prepared, and the application was supported by the forensic psychiatric nurse at the Court House.
Judge Tony Couch granted the request and also agreed to suppress the man’s name until the next remand.
He said the interim suppression order could be considered again then. “The position then may depend on what the (psychiatric) report discloses,” he said.
