Sex offending against young girl admitted
A 47-year-old man from Christchurch and Takaka has been remanded in custody for sentencing after admitting a series of child sex charges involving a victim aged seven and eight years.
Stephen Graeme Conn pleaded guilty by video-link from the Christchurch Men’s Prison yesterday.
He admitted charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, indecent assault, and inducing a girl to do an indecent act. He also admitted 38 charges of possessing objectionable publications.
Conn had separately admitted charges of possessing a pipe for smoking cannabis, possession of cannabis, and possession of the class A drug Mescaline.
He told the police he had been given the Mescaline cactus paste by a friend, and it contained hallucinogenic qualities.
Christchurch District Court Judge Alistair Garland remanded him for a Crown sentencing on April 15, and read him a first strike warning that imposes heavier sentences on offenders who commit further violent or sexual offences after the warning.
The police said the offences involved touching the girl, getting her to masturbate him, and filming some of the abuse taking place on a web camera. He also showing her pornography on his computer.
Police later executed a search warrant at his home in Takaka in March 2014. They seized electronic gear, including two laptop computers which were sent to the Electronic Crime Laboratory for analysis. That led to the charges of possessing objectionable material.
Conn admitted he had touched the girl and allowed her to touch him several times. He admitted he had shown her a pornographic video and had made one recording of a sexual activity between the two of them. He stated that he had not shared the images with anyone else.
He said he did not know where the SD card was with the recording he had made.
