‘Chop shop’ charges admitted
A Pines Beach man has admitted receiving charges over what was described last year as a stolen vehicle “chop shop” at Woodend.
Ryan Jay Mills, admitted six charges – including possession of methamphetamine for supply – before Judge David Saunders in the Christchurch District Court today and was remanded in custody for sentencing on April 14.
His guilty pleas were put in after police agreed to withdraw a series of other charges including possession of LSD, possession of an offensive weapon, and three of receiving a $65,000 digger, a car, and a water pump.
Ironically, the digger charge that has now been withdrawn, was what led to his arrest. The machine was trucked from a subdivision in Prestons Road in the early hours of the morning and was traced to a yard at Woodend through its GPS.
That led to the discovery of the other stolen vehicles, but police have accepted that the digger was not related to Mills’ activities.
Mills has pleaded guilty to receiving another stolen $25,000 digger, two vehicles, and a trailer.
He also admitted possession of methamphetamine for supply at Woodend on December 12, and driving while disqualified in Kaiapoi in November.
The disqualified driving charge is laid as a repeat offence because Mills will also face sentencing for two earlier convictions at the same time.
