Long jail term over drug courier operation

Court House-Sept-2013-05A 34-year-old who admitted charges relating to a domestic drug courier operation was sentenced to seven years nine months in prison, in the Christchurch District Court.

Judge David Saunders sentenced Tamal Edward McMeekan on seven charges – two of possession of methamphetamine for supply, two of unlawful possession of a pistol, possession of implements for using methamphetamine, dealing in methamphetamine, and possession of cannabis for supply.

After his arrest at a motel in Blenheim Road he was bailed for possession of, and offering to supply methamphetamine, possession of a pistol, and possession of three pipes for using drugs, dating from February to March 2014.

While on bail between July and August 2014, McMeekan arranged for other people to travel to Auckland on domestic flights to uplift methamphetamine and bring it to his address.

Police stopped two people at the Christchurch Airport, and found the drugs on a woman.

When police searched McMeekan’s house they found a loaded shotgun, and charged him with possession of the shotgun, possession of methamphetamine, and supplying methamphetamine.
