Worries over lost child sex abuse video
A young victim remains worried that an SD card showing her sexual abuse is still missing, while her 47-year-old abuser begins a six-year jail term.
Stephen Graeme Conn says he tried to help the police find the missing memory card when they raided his property at Takaka, but it could not be found.
He had filmed the abuse of the girl, who is not related to him, on a webcam while he lived in Christchurch.
Christchurch District Court Judge David Saunders said: “There’s obviously fears by the complainant that these images are still out there somewhere in the community.”
Defence counsel Phillip Allan told the court: “He provided significant assistance to the police but unfortunately that has not resulted in the recovery of the file that is of concern.”
Crown prosecutor Aja Trinder said, “He made an intimate recording which has not been recovered. A highly detrimental recording is out there somewhere.”
Conn was appearing for sentence after admitting charges of sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection, indecent assault, and inducing a girl to do an indecent act. He also admitted 38 charges of possessing objectionable publications.
Conn had separately admitted charges of possessing a pipe for smoking cannabis, possession of cannabis, and possession of the class A drug Mescaline.
He told the police he had been given the Mescaline cactus paste by a friend, and it contained hallucinogenic qualities.
Miss Trinder there had been no reference to Conn trading in images, but he had posed as a 15-year-old girl on social media websites when he was canvassing for pornography.
Mr Allan handed the judge a letter from Conn. The Crown described the letter as “self-serving”, but Mr Allan said it showed he was remorseful and genuinely motivated to address his offending through the Kia Marama sex offenders’ rehabilitation programme.
Judge Saunders imposed a series of sentences totalling six years’ jail, but imposed no minimum non-parole term.
