Evidence completed in home invasion trial

Court House-Sept-2013-07Evidence has been completed in the trial of a mother and two sons charged with a home invasion in Wainoni March 2014 in which two residents were allegedly injured.

The Crown closed its case today in the trial of Sarah Janine Godkin, 48, and her sons Ethan James Milner, 21, and Isaac Miles Milner, 22. The three deny joint charges of burglary while armed with weapons – a glass blender jug and a metal bike rack – and Godkin denies sexual violation of a woman at the address.

The trial heard evidence on Monday from doctors who had treated the couple who were injured in the attack which began while they were naked in bed. The man received a laceration to the cheek and head, and the Crown says the woman received genital injuries from Godkin.

The woman was recalled to give evidence after a doctor had noted her as saying five days after she was initially treated, that the injury had been inflicted by a man. She told the Christchurch District Court jury that she had never said that. She did not see her injury being caused, but Godkin was the only person near her at the time.

After the completion of the Crown case, the court adjourned and then defence counsel announced that no evidence would be called for the three defendants.

The court then adjourned for the day. Closing addresses will be heard on Tuesday, and Judge Brian Callaghan will sum up on Wednesday, the trial’s seventh day.
