Child pornography charges denied
A professional Canterbury man alleged to have possessed child pornography images is denying 14 charges and has elected trial by jury.
The man appeared and entered the pleas at the Christchurch District Court today before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll.
At the request of defence counsel Grant Tyrrell – and with no opposition from the police – Judge O’Driscoll continued the order suppressing the man’s name, occupation, and all other identifying details.
Mr Tyrrell said publication of the man’s name would cause extreme hardship both for the man and for another family member.
At the man’s first appearance three weeks ago, Judge O’Driscoll said the publication of the man’s occupation would create speculation amongst others in that occupation.
The charges say that the man had possession of the images while overseas in 2013. He originally faced 28 charges but 14 were duplications replacing charges containing errors.
The charges describe the images in detail. The images sometimes involve more than one child, or “early to mid-teen” children, and show sexual activity taking place.
The charges allege the man had possession of the images knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that they were objectionable.
The man was remanded to a case review hearing on September 28, and the suppression order was continued till then.
