Bike theft accused now faces helmet charge
A 46-year-old man charged with stealing several bikes from Christchurch Boys’ High School was back in court today on a further charge of stealing a bicycle helmet.
Robert John Commons is alleged to have stolen five bikes from six visits at the school, and another bike from Christchurch Hospital.
He also faces charges of possession of cannabis, and possession of utensils for cannabis.
In the Christchurch District Court today Judge Paul Kellar remanded Commons on bail to November 19, with conditions that he does not go near the school nor the hospital.
None of the bikes have been recovered, but Christchurch Boys’ High senior master, Craig Dunnett, was able to provide video footage of a man taking bikes from the school during the day.
The thief allegedly biked into the bike shed, left his bike there and rode out on one of the students’ bikes, then returned later to collect the bike he arrived on.
