Court House-entranceA man has admitted using a key-ring camera to video a teenage girl as she showered.

The 43-year-old man was granted name suppression after his guilty plea to a charge of making an objectionable publication, at the Christchurch District Court today.

Judge Alistair Garland remanded him on bail for sentencing on February 16.

He ordered a report on his suitability for home or community detention but warned the man that was not an indication of what the final sentence would be.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Scott said the girl noticed the key-ring camera with an SD card sitting on its edge under some plastic on the bathroom window sill.

She took the camera to school where she put the camera’s SD card into an iPad and found recordings of herself in the bathroom showering, and in her bedroom.

The police’s Electronic Crime Laboratory examined two SD cards belonging to the man and found recordings, including two that showed him placing the camera in position.

Judge Garland granted name suppression but called for submissions on whether it should be continued, ahead of the sentencing.

He also referred the case for a restorative justice meeting between the man and the victim, but he said: “In my opinion it is not appropriate, but I’ll leave that to Restorative Justice to decide.”
