Custody remand for Ferry Road arson accused
No bail was sought for a 31-year-old Woolston man charged with the arson of a Ferry Road business destroyed by fire on Thursday morning.
Kyle Stuart John Tappin was remanded without plea in custody to December 10 when he appeared before Judge David Saunders in the Christchurch District Court.
He has been charged with the arson of Image Vault at 71 Ferry Road.
Owners say the business was completely destroyed after a flaming object was pushed through a mailbox slot.
It was the second business to be destroyed by a fire in Christchurch in two days after a blaze ripped through a trailer building company early on Wednesday.
Defence counsel Andrew McKenzie told the judge that the police were opposing bail for Tappin and no application was being made at his appearance today.
He said a screening test had been carried out on Tappin by a forensic psychiatric nurse at the police station and no issues had arisen that would prompt a psychiatric assessment under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act.
Tappin’s next appearance will be by video-link from the prison.
